As visitors fill our roads - Farron bids to bring back 'stolen' highway funds to South Lakes
As the Whitsun half term holidays see a welcome influx of visitors to our area, South Lakes MP Tim Farron has made a formal bid to win back £500,000 of road repairs money that was diverted from South Lakeland's roads last month.
Labour and Conservative county councillors voted to divert these funds to Barrow and Carlisle, leaving the county's busiest tourist honeypots without the funds to improve their roads.
Tim has made a formal request to Stewart Young, the Labour Leader of the County Council to give back the funds to South Lakeland in order to ensure that local road surfaces are improved and made safer.
Commenting, Mr Farron said: "In South Lakes, we have the heaviest traffic in the county - and that is especially so when the tourist season hots up. But our area is being robbed of basic road repair funding. As a sign of good faith, I am requesting that the £500,000 removed from our local roads budget be given back to us right away so that we can improve our roads in order to increase safety and to enhance the tourism economy."
