South Lakes MP Tim Farron has put down a motion in parliament to mark the 25th anniversary of the Westmorland General Hospital. Later this week Tim will attend the official anniversary celebration at the hospital.

Tim's motion praises the hospital staff for their dedication and the high standards of care they provide, as well as thanking local people for the times they have campaigned to protect services at the hospital when they were under threat. Just last summer, Tim led a campaign to keep open the Kentmere mental health ward at the hospital.

Tim said: "It is fantastic to be celebrating the 25th anniversary of Westmorland General Hospital this week. Like many local people, my kids were born there and I have visited a number of times when loved ones have needed care. It makes such a difference to our area to have such an excellent local hospital on our doorstep.

"But this anniversary is also a reminder that there has never been a guarantee that we would reach this 25th anniversary. At times various services, and even the hospital itself, have been under threat, and each time local residents have rallied around to fight for our services and show that we care.

"I'd like to pay tribute to the professionalism and dedication of the hospital staff, who go above and beyond to provide excellent care to local residents.

"The Conservatives' plans for £572million of cuts to our local health services could once more place local services under threat. But local people know that I will always do everything I can to stand up for our fantastic local hospital."
