MP slams rail fare increases
A report released today shows that UK commuters pay up to 6 times more on rail fares than their European counterparts. Local MP Tim Farron has criticised train companies for the latest price increases, following the news that Virgin and Northern Rail have increased fares by 2.4% and 2.2% respectively.
These price hikes come despite evidence that customers are not happy with the service provided. A recent survey showed that just 52% of customers were satisfied with Northern Rail's services, and just 38% thought they were value for money. Meanwhile, a government report shows that Virgin Trains West Coast line had the highest level of complaints of any train company.
Tim said: "It is clear that people don't feel that the train companies provide the level of service or value for money that they expect. Despite this, train fares continue to rise, leaving UK residents with some of the highest train fares in Europe. These price increases are wrong at a time when many are struggling to make ends meet.
"Instead of allowing private companies to fleece hardworking local people for more and more cash, the government should do something that would make a real difference to our area and put an end to delays to the Lakes Line electrification project."
