FARRON TAKES "SHUN BURN"CAMPAIGN TO PARLIAMENT

9 Jul 2008

Local MP Tim Farron has launched the 'Shun Burn' campaign in Parliament after tabling an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons welcoming the Teenage Cancer Trust's campaign which aims to raise awareness of the effectiveness of suncreams in helping to protect against skin cancer,

Mr Farron launched his parliamentary campaign after it was revealed that cancer cases involving young people had doubled over the last twenty years.

Mr Farron called on the Government to make suncream cheaper by waiving the Value Added Tax and reclassifying it as a healthcare item rather than a luxury item.

Commenting Mr Farron said:

"Hopefully this Summer, people will have the chance to enjoy some sunshine, but we need to make sure that this is not at the expense of their health ".

"We have a responsibility to provide young people with the correct information about how to protect themselves from the sun, but the Government also has a responsibility to make it easier for them to do so".

"Continuing to label sun cream as a luxury item is both irresponsible and dangerous. If the Government is serious about educating people about the dangers of the sun then it is essential that it reclassifies suncream as a healthcare item
