Farron praises local 'Auschwitz to Ambleside' exhibition

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP, Tim Farron, has submitted a motion to the House of Commons paying tribute to the exhibition at Windermere Library commemorating the lives of the 300 Jewish children who landed at Crosby-on-Eden airfield after the Second World War.

The 300 Jewish children, all of whom had been separated from their families and forced into Nazi concentration camps across Occupied Europe, landed in the Lake District on 14 August 1945. They arrived in Britain as part of a Government programme, which provided accommodation to help them recuperate in the now 'lost' wartime village of Calgarth Estate, which stood by the lake between Windermere and Ambleside.

The exhibition gives details of the journey they took from the Theresienstadt Ghetto in the Czech Republic and their subsequent stories of rehabilitation within the Cumbrian community.

Commenting today Tim said: "I am extremely proud of this exhibition, which honours not only the incredible story of survival of these children, but also to the community into which they came who showed a great warmth and compassion in welcoming them into the area and helping them to rebuild their lives."
