Unemployment Fall Welcomed By MP

17 Dec 2015

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that unemployment in the constituency is down compared to a year ago.

The total number of unemployed claimants in Westmorland and Lonsdale in November 2015 was 224, which is 11 lower than in November 2014.

The area has the 8th lowest claimant rate of all 650 UK constituencies, with unemployed claimants making up just 0.6% of the economically active population aged 16-64, compared to a national equivalent of 2.4%.

Tim said: "These figures are great news for the people of Westmorland and Lonsdale, and are testament to the strength and creativity of local businesses.

"However, many local businesses now face a very difficult period ahead due to the disruption caused by the floods.

"I will continue to publicise South Lakeland as 'open for business', and to push for the reopening of the A591 as soon as possible, so that the local tourist trade can thrive."
