Two Cancer Charities join local MP in fight for Cancer services in the South Lakes

9 Jan 2009

Local MP Tim Farron yesterday met with Macmillan Cancer and CancerCare who pledged their support to the growing campaign to bring chemotherapy and radiotherapy to our area. In addition, nearly 4,000 local residents have signed Mr Farron's petition in support of the bid to bring the much needed services to the South Lakes.

Tim said: "I've been overwhelmed by the phenomenal enthusiasm of the community for the campaign wherever I go. The support of thousands of local people, groups and charities like Macmillan Cancer and CancerCare has shown that the community really wants a new cancer treatment unit at Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal."

"CancerCare and Macmillan Cancer are charities dedicated to supporting those with cancer, their families and their carers and they will be a great support in bringing chemotherapy and radiotherapy to our area."

"What's become obvious from my time spent gathering signatures for this petition is just how many people have been personally affected by cancer, either directly themselves or through their families. This just goes to show what a massive difference having this treatment centre would make for the local community.

"I would urge everyone to sign the petition as the support from across the community can make a big difference to people suffering with cancer, and hopefully bring a lease of new life to the Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal."
