"Treasury statement about Kendal HMRC office sends mixed messages" - Farron

14 Nov 2007

In an answer to a parliamentary question tabled by local MP Tim Farron, the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, Jane Kennedy MP has stated that "HMRC considers the impact of its plans on customers, staff, business efficiency, diversity and the local community before making decisions."

Mr Farron welcomed the news that customers and staff would be taken into account, but remains concerned that no pledge to retain the Kendal office has been issued.

Tim Farron said:

"It is heartening to hear from the Treasury that local factors such as the well being of customers and staff are taken into account when considering consolidation of branches. The closure of the Kendal office would undoubtedly damage the service given to customers and be against the interests of the staff and the local community.

"I want to hear a firm commitment from ministers that they will retain the Kendal Office. It is time this Government stopped pursuing shifting targets and started pursuing the wellbeing of the people!"
