Tim Welcomes Fall In Unemployment

11 Nov 2015

Tim Farron MP has welcomed the latest figures showing unemployment down compared to a year ago.

The total number of unemployed claimants in Tim's Westmorland and Lonsdale constituency in October 2015 was 217, which is 8 lower than the equivalent figure for October 2014.

This figure represents a rate of 0.5% of the economically active population aged 16 to 64, significantly lower than the national average of 2.4%. Westmorland and Lonsdale has the 8th lowest unemployment rate of all 650 UK constituencies.

Commenting on this data, Tim said: "This is fantastic news for Westmorland and Lonsdale, and shows the strength of local businesses.

However, there are also some causes for concern. Almost a quarter of these claimants were aged 18-24, and we need to do more to help get young people in to work.

It is also worth noting that many of those in work are on low wages or seasonal work, and are likely to be hit hard by government plans to cut tax credits."
