Tim Farron starts petition for Conservative Government to provide funding to repair and reopen Kendal bridges
The Liberal Democrat candidate for Westmorland and Lonsdale, Tim Farron, has launched a petition this morning calling on the Conservative Government to provide urgent funding to repair and reopen two bridges near Kendal.
It comes as Westmorland and Furness Council have announced today that Brigsteer and Underbarrow Bridges will be closed from this Wednesday due to serious structural concerns.
Tim Farron, Liberal Democrat candidate for Westmorland and Lonsdale said: “For the council to close both these bridges at the same time, with such short notice, shows how serious the risk is of these bridges collapsing.
“However there’s no doubt that these closures will lead to significant delays and disruption to the lives of local residents and businesses.
“This is yet another example of our country’s infrastructure crumbling, with our local council left to literally pick up the pieces.
“The work to fix this will likely cost a significant amount and this worries me greatly when the Conservative Government has consistently underfunded our local council and its predecessors for many years.
“The Conservative Government must provide emergency funding to get these vital arterial bridges repaired and reopened as quickly as possible.”
