South Lakeland MP, Tim Farron, has today called on the Government to end second home council tax subsidy.

Currently, owners of more than one home can claim a council tax subsidy on each 'second' home, which is defined as any home that is not their primary place of residence. This subsidy can vary from anywhere between 10% and 50% of their council tax bill.

However, with the vast size of the UK budget deficit, it is non-second home owners who are being punished as they still have to pay the full council tax bill on their own home and also foot the bill for their richer neighbours. Within the South Lakeland area, even though South Lakeland District Council gives the minimum discount possible in law, it still costs the local taxpayer over £1 million per year.

Commenting today Tim said: "It is hugely unfair that in a time where huge cuts are being made in order to try and reduce the deficit that people who can afford more than one home are being given a subsidy not available to those who cannot."

"By ending this subsidy local councils can spend this much needed money on providing local services and ensure that overall council tax bills are kept as low as possible for all residents, not just those who are lucky enough to have more than one home."
