South Lakeland is 'start up hub' of Cumbria - Farron

20 Nov 2014
Creating a thriving high street in Kendal and other towns in South Lakeland is a key Council Plan priority for SLDC.

Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed information released by Cumbria Intelligence Observatory that South Lakeland is the top place within the county for start-up businesses. Tim has said this news shows that our area is the 'start up hub' of Cumbria.

Figures collated by the organisation Banksearch show that there were 724 business start-ups in Cumbria in July-Sept 2014. The highest number was in South Lakeland with 169 start-ups (23% of all start-ups), followed by Allerdale with 138 and Carlisle with 136 (both 19%).

The highest proportion of start-ups across Cumbria was in the real estate & professional services sector with 191 new businesses (26%), followed by recreation, personal & community services with 111 (15%) and construction with 100 (14%).

These figures add to those collated by Labour Insight for the period Aug-Oct 2014, which found there were 5,086 job vacancies in Cumbria, which is 295 more than in the previous quarter (May-Jul).

Tim said: "Seeing so many entrepreneurs setting up their own businesses is fantastic and shows that our area is the start-up hub of Cumbria. This news, added to the growing number of jobs being advertised and our work on apprenticeships, shows we are really making a difference locally."
