Queen's Speech Adopts Lib Dem Plans On Mobile Phone Coverage

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron has welcomed the government's adoption of a Lib Dem measure to improve mobile phone services in today's Queen's Speech.

The government adopted plans originally proposed by Lib Dem MP Alastair Carmichael, which will give new protection to consumers of mobile phone services.

The Queen's Speech accepts the proposals of a 10-minute rule Bill, proposed by Alistair earlier this year, to require mobile telecoms companies to disclose the quality of coverage they offer.

The measures are based on Alistair's Mobile Telecommunications Network Coverage (Contractual Obligations) Bill.

Tim said: "I'm delighted that the government has adopted this Lib Dem proposal, which will make a real difference to customers. In rural areas such as South Lakeland, many residents will have experienced the frustration of poor mobile phone coverage. These new measures will ensure that people will know what service they are getting, and will have a real right of compensation if the service they receive isn't the same as what was advertised. Good mobile phone coverage is essential for residents and businesses, and this move towards greater transparency is a welcome improvement to the market."
