MP welcomes rugby club investment

Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that Kendal Rugby Club will receive almost £50K from a special council fund which supports community projects.

The grant will go towards phase 2 of the rugby club's new Mint Bridge ground. It is one of sixteen new 'Locally Important Project' (LIP) grants approved by South Lakeland District Council. In total, these grants are worth more than a quarter of a million pounds.

LIPs money is allocated through the New Homes Bonus, where the government matches the council tax raised for new homes and properties brought back into use.

Community groups, clubs and organisations such as local town and parish councils are eligible to apply.

Tim said: "I am delighted that the District Council will be supporting Kendal Rugby Club with this grant.

"Kendal Rugby Club has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and has ambitious plans for the future. The first team was promoted last year, while this year the second team has had a fantastic season, winning the league and cup double. The women's and youth sections of the club have also had successful seasons.

"The development of the club's new, state-of-the-art ground is massively exciting not only for the club, but also for Kendal and the wider area. It will create absolutely top-class facilities and will give the club a fantastic platform on which to build further success in the seasons to come."
