MP welcomes recycling figures showing South Lakes as above average
Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed the release of recycling rates, showing South Lakes to be high up on the list.
Detailed figures made public by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) on Thursday, show that recycling rates in England have reached their highest ever at 41.2% between April 2010 and March 2011.
The figures also reveal that South Lakes is recycling more household waste than average, at 44%, 1% up from last year. This is an incredible three times more than Ashford Council, who came out the worst overall.
Tim, on hearing the news, said: "I am very pleased that our community effort to recycle so far has been recognised. But, whilst the figure for South Lakes is commendable, I feel it is essential we keep motivated as there is so much more we can do. For instance, I want us to move towards doorstep recycling of cardboard and plastic. Hopefully next year, through new initiatives, we will have recycled even more!"
