MP welcomes news that fell top weather service is saved

Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron has today welcomed news that the Lake District's winter fell top assessment service has been saved after a campaign.

There were fears that the lifeline to half a million people every year would be axed unless £25,000 could be found. But thanks to donations and sponsorship the service has been saved.

The winter fell top assessment service has collected invaluable climate data every day of the winter season from thepeakofHelvellynfor the past 35 years. This information is essential for the 9.1 million British ramblers as well as the half a million annual callers to Weatherline and others accessing data online.

Tim previously put forward an Early Day Motion strenuously urging Parliament to support the significant work of the winter-fell top assessment service.

Tim commented: "I believe the winter-fell top assessment is a unique resource that provides both an invaluable service to the local community and important data for the wider population. So I am delighted that the service has been saved. I want to thank the National Park and all involved for helping save a vital service."
