MP welcomes key step forward in campaign for Kendal relief road

2 Jul 2021

This afternoon, South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that Cumbria County Council has secured government funding to further develop proposals for the Kendal Northern Access Route.

The Department for Transport has approved the Strategic Outline Business Case for the Kendal Northern Access Route and supported the County Council's funding application for the next stage of business case development - the Outline Business Case.

The Council will now start work on developing the business case for the route, a new road connecting the A591 Windermere Road and the A6 Shap Road, to the north of Kendal.

Tim said: "This is a really positive step forward in a very long running campaign and I want to thank Cumbria County Council for all the hard work they've been doing to help us reach this stage.

"A northern relief road would allow us to alleviate congestion in the middle of Kendal, which would not only be good for local businesses but as a result it would create a much nicer town centre for pedestrians and cyclists."
