MP votes for windfall tax on energy giants to cover soaring prices
In Parliament this week, local MP Tim Farron voted in favour of introducing a windfall tax on energy giants to cover rising energy prices.
This morning it was announced that household energy prices will rise on average by £693 from April.
Research by the Liberal Democrats has found that Eden (2nd) and South Lakeland (9th) are in the top 10 areas of England facing the biggest energy bills.
It comes as energy giant Shell have posted profits of £4.7bn - their highest quarterly profit in eight years.
On Tuesday, Tim voted in favour of a motion which would place a windfall tax on oil and gas companies - the only Cumbrian MP to do so.
Tim said: "I am seriously worried about the impact these massive energy price rises will have on local families.
"The Government have known this has been coming for some time but have been completely distracted with investigations over their lockdown parties in Downing Street to take the action needed to protect households.
"But it's not too late for them to act. A windfall tax on the oil and gas companies would wipe out these crippling energy price rises."
