MP urges shoppers to back fairtrade

24 Feb 2015

South Lakes MP Tim Farron is calling on shoppers to choose a shopping list to change lives, to mark Fairtrade Fortnight.

Fairtrade Fortnight runs from February 23-March 8.

Fairtrade products have been produced by small-scale farmer organisations or plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards.

The standards include protection of workers' rights and the environment, payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in business or community projects.

Tim has encouraged people to go fair trade.

Tim said: "Fairtrade Fortnight reminds us all that by making a few small changes to our shopping habits we can make a real difference to producers in the developing world.

"It is a simple step to take, but it is one which has very lasting positive repercussions for people who really need it."
