MP urges online safety as dating app crime emerges

21 Dec 2016

South Lakeland MP Tim Farron has urged residents to take care online, as he reveals that over the last two years, the first crimes linked to dating apps have taken place in Cumbria.

Figures uncovered by Tim reveal that until 2014 there had not been any crimes related to high-profile dating apps tindr and grindr. However, since then there has been a low but steady number of crimes in Cumbria related to these apps. The majority of these offences are related to sexual offences and taking or making indecent photos.

Tim said: "Technology has transformed almost every aspect of modern life, but it is important that we remain aware of the potential dangers that it poses. The emergence of this sort of crime over the last few years shows the need to remain vigilant. I'd urge anyone who has experienced anything dubious or potentially criminal while using these apps to report it to the police immediately. The law remains the law even when using dating apps or the internet."
