MP signs cross-party letter calling for ban on fur trade

Local MP Tim Farron has joined over 100 cross-party MPs in writing to the Environment Secretary George Eustice, urging the Government to introduce a ban on the sale and import of animal fur.

Despite banning fur farming in 2000, the UK currently allows imports of tens of millions of pounds of animal fur every year.

According to the Humane Society International, around 100 million animals are bred and killed on intensive fur farms specifically to supply the fashion industry.

Tim said: "Thanks to farmers in Cumbria and beyond, the UK has some of the highest and most humane animal welfare standards in the world.

"The fur trade should have no place in a country which cares for animals as much as we do.

"I'm proud to join more than 100 of my colleagues in signing this letter, and implore the Government to ban the sale and import of animal fur."
