MP presents bill to give cancer patients better access to radiotherapy

20 Dec 2017

Local MP Tim Farron has presented a bill in the House of Commons which would make it a legal requirement that people should not have to travel more than the national guideline of 45 minutes to reach their nearest radiotherapy centre.

Currently most people needing radiotherapy treatment in the South Lakes have to travel over an hour to their nearest radiotherapy unit in Preston.

Tim said: "It's simply unacceptable that people suffering with cancer in South Cumbria are forced to make 2-3-hour round trips in order to receive life-saving care.

"This bill would make it necessary for there to be a radiotherapy unit brought to Westmorland General.

"Today is another step forward in winning our campaign, and I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us so far."
