MP praises council as housing waiting list falls

20 Dec 2016

Local MP Tim Farron has congratulated the council following a fall in the number of people on the social housing waiting list, saying it shows the benefits of the district council's plan to build 1000 affordable homes to rent by 2025.

There are currently 2862 applicants on the housing register in South Lakeland, which is a fall of more than 3% compared to the equivalent figure a year ago of 2960. As recently as 2013, the figure was as high as 3470 people.

Tim has praised the Lib Dem-run council for its commitment to building 1000 affordable homes to rent by 2025. Of this total, 267 have been built since the policy was introduced in 2014, and the district council is on track to meet its target.

Tim said: "There are people that will have a place to call home this Christmas because of what the District Council has done. It is clear from the reduction in the housing waiting list that the council's commitment to building affordable homes to rent is having a real impact on local people. My thanks go to South Lakeland District Council making this policy a reality, and helping to ensure that local people can get a place to live in the area they have grown up in."
