MP – NHS pay rise welcome news but not sustainable unless the health system is funded properly

Commenting on the news that some NHS nurses are set for their first pay rise in eight years, Tim, speaking in the House of Commons, said: "The minimum amount that nurses in South Cumbria would've lost since the pay freeze is £4,306. Given that the average house price in my constituency is 10 times the value of the average nurses' salary, you can see why that has a huge impact on retention and recruitment.

"This rise is deserved, welcome and overdue, but without a long-term plan for funding health and social care, this announcement won't be trusted.

"We need a new deal to refresh Beveridge's vision for the 21st century. We should be prepared to be honest with the British people and say this will involve a modest but clear increase in taxation."
