MP hails success of local primary schools
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has tabled a motion in Parliament hailing the success Sedbergh Primary School and Cartmel Primary School for placing 3rd and 6th respectively in Cumbrian league tables for their proportion of high achieving pupils.
Recently released league tables showed that at Sedbergh County Primary School 62% of pupils finished year 6, their final year in Primary School, having achieved levels 5 or higher in both their Maths and English SATs. Cartmel Primary School reached a similarly high level of attainment with 60% of students achieving a level 5 or above.
This extremely high level of experience is particularly exceptional as a level 5 is the expected level of achievement for students in year 9 at secondary school, who are on average 3 years older than primary school leavers.
In his Early Day Motion, Tim praised the hard work of staff and pupils alike in earning this success and called on others schools across Cumbria to learn from both Cartmel and Sedbergh Primary schools.
Commenting Tim said: "These are two outstanding schools and that enabled their students to achieve an incredibly high level of success in their primary education. To have more than half the pupils in each school reaching standards expected of students up to 3 or 4 years older than them is fantastic and the staff at both Sedbergh and Cartmel primary schools deserve our congratulations.
"In South Lakeland we are lucky to have so many fantastic local primary and secondary schools. However, we must remember that it is equally as important to focus on children who may struggle more with school, which is why policies like the pupil premium will have a huge impact on education in our area."
