South Lakes MP Tim Farron has tabled a motion in Parliament congratulating the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald on being named weekly newspaper of the year at The Newspaper Awards 2013.

Tim's motion acknowledges the prize as recognition of the hard work and dedication to high standards of the paper's staff, and praises the broad appeal of its content among local people of all ages.

The motion also pays tribute to the Herald's ability to achieve success in what are very challenging times for print media in general, and urges local people to support the paper's future by picking up a weekly copy.

Commenting, Tim said: "Whenever our local press receive recognition on a national stage like this it should stand as a source of great pride to the whole region.

"As I have said in the past, the reporters at papers like the Herald are not just writing about the local community, they are a part of it. They are the glue that holds our community together and their devotion to this role has clearly shone through to the Newspaper Awards panel.

"I would like to wish the staff at the Herald continued success in the future, and I hope local people who haven't already will start to pick up a copy regularly."
