MP calls on councils to do more to tell people about dangers on the sands
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on local councils around Morecambe Bay to look at ways to improve signage and advice given to tourists visiting the coastline.
Tim's call follows a Westmorland Gazette campaign to heighten awareness of the dangers posed by the treacherous MorecambeBay sands. It follows two recent incidents in which holidaymakers found themselves trapped in quicksands and being rescued by coastguards.
Tim also paid tribute to Bay Search and Rescue for their work keeping people safe on the sands. Tim described them as 'community heroes'.
Tim said: "It is fantastic that the Gazette has launched this campaign and will distribute thousands of safety posters but they can't do it alone. I want local councils to play their part too. The easiest thing that we can do to make sure we heighten awareness is improve information and signage around the Bay. I am asking councils around the Bay to look at what advice they offer and what they can do to improve it. It's a simple thing they could do which could make a big difference."
