MP calls for new laws to tackle dog theft to be fast tracked

26 May 2021

Responding to the news that the Prime Minister is threatening tougher sentences for dog thieves and owners who abandon their pets, South Lakes MP Tim Farron, said:

"I've been calling for action to tackle the worrying rise in dog theft during the pandemic, so I welcome the news that the Prime Minister is promising tougher sentences for these criminals.

"However, this is a problem now. Dog thefts are soaring and it's all very well making promises if they're not followed through. It took years for the Conservatives to toughen up sentences for animal cruelty.

"Legislation on dog thefts must be fast-tracked. Action on dog thefts will have cross party support, and the Government must act now."
