MP calls for guidance over dispensing rule

3 Nov 2009

MP Tim Farron has today called for Cumbria PCT to offer GP's guidance over when to proscribe medicines for over 28 days.

Cumbria PCT encourages GPs currently to issue 28 day prescriptions because it believes it reduces the chance for wastage. Tim has been contact by various constituents who have a variety of illnesses that regularly rely on repeat and continuous prescriptions like insulin for example.

Tim said:

"I'm calling on the PCT to offer guidance to GPs allow flexibility into the system. If you need insulin you should be able to get larger prescriptions to make sure that you don't have to travel constantly back and forth to your doctors.

In South Lakeland with our small rural communities and patch public transport system we need to make sure that we don't make people's lives even worse. The PCT need to act to make sure they allow doctors to use common sense."
