MP calls for end to ‘no fault’ evictions at Shelter parliamentary event
South Lakes MP Tim Farron has called on the Conservative Government to honour their election manifesto commitment to ban Section 21 'no fault' evictions.
Speaking at a parliamentary reception organised by the national housing and homelessness charity Shelter, Tim said that families across the South Lakes were being served with Section 21 evictions so that their landlord could put their home on Airbnb.
Section 21 of the 1988 Housing Act allows landlords to evict tenants without having to provide a reason and with as little as two months' notice.
Speaking after the event, Tim said: "Cumbria's housing crisis is leading to young people not being able to afford to stay in the town or village that they grew up in.
"Meanwhile many are being evicted from their home so their landlord can make a quick buck by putting it on the holiday market.
"Not only is this immoral, it is also massively bad news for our local economy which is being robbed of the local workforce that businesses are crying out for.
"It's been 27 months since the Conservatives put in their manifesto at the general election that they would scrap section 21 evictions but they've done nothing."
