MP becomes patron of leading cancer charity
On World Cancer Day (Sunday 4th), South Lakes MP Tim Farron officially became a patron of the leading cancer charity Action Radiotherapy.
Tim is a passionate advocate for radiotherapy and has campaigned extensively for a radiotherapy unit in Westmorland General Hospital
Recently, Tim hosted a radiotherapy reception in Parliament to highlight the need for the treatment to receive continued attention and investment from Government and NHS England, and that access needs to be improved.
At the moment, cancer patients living in the South Lakes have to make a journey of at least 45 minutes to reach their nearest radiotherapy unit in Preston.
Tim said: "It's an honour to become a patron of this incredible charity.
"Radiotherapy is a vital treatment and has saved and lengthened so many people's lives down the years.
"But sadly, there are lots of people who are suffering with cancer both in South Cumbria and across the rest of the country, for whom their nearest radiotherapy centre is just too far away.
"I look forward to working with Action Radiotherapy to making sure that everyone in our country has access to this life-saving treatment."
