MP backs Windermere People's Million scheme - 'Windermere RePlay'
A community project to help transform a lakeside park in Windermere has been shortlisted for a £50,000 TV prize. Windermere's local MP Tim Farron has thrown his support behind their bid and paid tribute to John Saunders and the Millerground Enhancement Group Committee for all their hard work.
The scheme to restore a play area at Millerground on the shores of Windermere will be competing against other community projects for the cash from the 'People's Millions' lottery fund in an X-Factor style TV phone-in on 25 November after ITV Border's flagship news programme Lookaround.
Millerground offers a peaceful natural environment and many years ago was routinely enjoyed by residents and visitors offering stunning views of the lake and recreational family-friendly facilities for boating, bathing and walks and picnics.
Over the years it has become run-down and overgrown and many well used features have become eroded.
The intention now is to restore the park to its former glory as a spectacular natural asset for not only Windermere residents but also anyone visiting the area from South Lakeland or beyond.
Community volunteers and students from local schools have been regularly turning up in all weathers and, with the help of National Trust Rangers, have been helping to clear undergrowth, restore pathways, plant bluebells and replace broken fences and gates.
Some small grants and funding have been received from local businesses, individuals and the Lib Dem-run district council and these have helped to purchase basic materials, gravel and bulbs.

The number to phone to vote for the bid will be announced on ITV on 25 November.
Tim said: "I am backing the campaign and will be voting for Millerground. It is a great facility that is much used by the community. With local residents' help we can win £50,000 to rejuvenate the park.
"I want to pay tribute to John Saunders and everyone behind the bid. I hope everyone will join with me and vote for them!"
John Saunders added: "Children and their families must always be able to enjoy the natural outdoors and all the excitement and adventure it can offer them in the wonderful Lake District. Please pick up the phone and vote for 'Windermere RePlay' on 25 November"
