MP backs New Transcription Service For Blind Or Partially Sighted Constituents

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has given his backing to a new transcription service launched by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and the Royal Mail.

The free-of-charge, confidential service is designed to help MPs communicate more effectively with blind or partially sighted constituents. There are 1.9 million people across the UK living with sight loss, averaging 3,000 in each parliamentary constituency.

Using the confidential transcription service, the RNIB can transcribe any Braille or audio constituency post that MPs receive from local residents. The RNIB can also convert MPs' letters into a format that can be used by constituents living with sight loss. The service is supported by a grant from Royal Mail and there is no charge to use it.

Tim is encouraging local residents who know anyone living with sight loss to make them aware of the service so they can contact their local MP as and when they may need to.

Tim said: "Sight loss affects a significant number of people, so I am delighted by this initiative. I want to thank the RNIB and Royal Mail for launching this service. It will make it easier for constituents living with sight loss to contact me, and also for me to communicate with my constituents. I always do everything I can to help constituents who get in touch with me, and this transcription service will help to ensure that this assistance is accessible to blind or partially sighted constituents. I would encourage local residents to use the transcription service if they need to, and also to tell others who may find it useful."
