MP backs call to make Grange crossing safer

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has backed a call by Network Rail executives to close a level railway crossing in Grange-Over-Sands, after it was declared it one of the region's most dangerous.

Network Rail are asking for permission from Cumbria County Council to shut the Bayley Lane crossing. They hope that residents will instead use the £2m underpass it constructed in 2006 to reach the towns promenade.

It is believed that this crossing as well as being one of the dangerous is one of the most used; with upwards of 1,000 people a day using it during peak summer months.

The crossing was the scene of a fatal accident in 1998.

Tim said: "I support Network Rail's stance and I hope that Cumbria County Council will give approve their request quickly. This crossing is one of the most dangerous in the region and the sooner we can make it safer, the better."
