MP backs call for investment in rural tourism

14 Dec 2016

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has backed calls by the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) today for the government to do more to support economic growth and tourism in rural England. Tim has written to the Tourism Minister to call for the government to do more to promote the Lake District as a tourist destination.

Giving evidence in parliament today to the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, a CLA spokesperson said: "poor digital connectivity and underinvestment threatens the unique nature of rural tourism."

Tim has backed the CLA's call, and has written to the Tourism Minister Tracey Crouch MP calling on the government to give the Lake District greater prominence and promote it alongside London as a leading British tourist destination.

Tim said: "Rural tourism is central to our area's economy, but as the CLA have pointed out, this could be under threat unless the government provides the investment necessary. Rural businesses desperately need access to decent broadband so they can connect with customers across the globe and promote their services. The government must act urgently to improve broadband access.

"I have also written to the Tourism Minister today to ask her to do more to promote the Lake District as a tourist destination. Our area is not only one of the most beautiful parts of the countryside, it also has a fascinating history and rich range of cultural activities on offer. The Lake District deserves to be promoted alongside London as one of our country's leading tourist attractions."
