MP backs 30 MPH zone plea from Hunters Croft residents

South Lakes MP Tim Farron and County Councillor Clare Feeney-Johnson are backing a campaign led by local residents on Hunters Croft to get Kendal's 30 mile per hour (mph) zone extended to cover the junction of their road and the Shap Road.

The petition signed by all the people in the close and surrounding streets like Gilthwaiterigg Lane are asking that the County Council extend Kendal's 30 mph to them. The recent development just off the Shap Roadin Kendal is just yards from a 30 sign but cars can drive significantly faster on that part of the Shap Roadbecause the county council deem it to be outside Kendal.

Tim recently went with Clare to pick up the residents petition and talk to them about the issue. Clare submitted the petition to the County Councils' local committee for discussion, and has asked the Area Engineer to set in motion data collection to enable speed and traffic volume to be measured as soon as possible.

Clare Feeney-Johnson commented to the committee: "This has my full support, I request that all options are looked into, not only speed but safe crossing possibilities too. Residents need to be able to safely exit in vehicles or on foot."

Also backing the campaign is South Lakeland District Councillor David Evans and Kendal Town Councillor Lynne Oldham.

Tim said: "All Alison and residents on Hunters Croft are asking for is that the 30mph zone is moved less than 100 metres. When I met them I understood their concerns about their children playing in the street close to a junction of a 40 mph road. As a Dad I totally understand their concerns and I am pleased to support their campaign."
