MP and Lib Dem councillors start petition to bring back a post office to Hawkshead

Today, Cumbrian MP Tim Farron and local Lib Dem councillors in Hawkshead have launched a petition calling for post office services to be brought back to the village.

Following the resignation of the Postmaster, Hawkshead Post Office was closed at the end of last year.

For years, the post office has been the only place where people can use banking services or withdraw cash and has been a key community hub in the middle of the village.

In a letter to the Chief Executive of Post Office Ltd, Tim and councillors Suzanne Pender, Ian Wharton and Tracy Coward said: "The age profile of Hawkshead is older than national average, and 10 percent of the community don't have a car and public transport is very limited.

"A round trip on foot to the next nearest post office in Coniston would take well over two hours.

"It would be a tragedy if Hawkshead is continued to be left without a post office.

"We would strongly encourage you to strain every sinew to ensure that this does not happen.

"The village is home to many businesses and so we are confident that a new home for post office services can be found.

"We would welcome the opportunity to meet with you or one of your colleagues to discuss this further and to receive an update on Post Office Ltd's search for an alternative home for the post office."
