South Lakes MP Tim Farron has today welcomed news that Stephen Hammond MP will be visiting the county to discuss the A590 on the afternoon of October 2nd.

Tim has been pressing Mr Hammond to come to the SouthLakes since former road minister Mike Penning cancelled several planned visits to Cumbria. Safety campaigners were concerned after the plans to build the roundabout had been scrapped. However following a strong campaign led by local councillors Sue Sanderson, Rod Wilson and Janet Willis, the Government announced in June that the plans would go forward in 2013/2014, pledging £500,000 for the scheme.

Commenting today Tim said, "For the past ten years local residents have been fighting for improvements to the A590, but have been left disappointed on many occasions. A visit from the new minister is welcome but we need progress on this and not just more talk. It is vital that this remains an urgent issue and we make significant progress with the plans."
