Limit second home ownership to tackle housing shortage for young people - MP

On the floor of the House of Commons this afternoon, local MP Tim Farron urged the Housing Secretary to tackle the housing crisis by limiting the rise of excessive second home ownership in the South Lakes.

It comes after the Resolution Foundation found that the number of British people who own a second home has doubled since 2001, while the number of millennials who own a home continues to fall.

Speaking during Housing questions, Tim said: "The Government is failing to meet the housing needs of young people in the South Lakes, whilst it ignores the simple fact that thousands of local houses are sat empty as second homes.

"Will the minister agree to change planning and tax regulations so that we can limit second home ownership so we can give our young people a place to call their own."

In response, the Secretary of State, James Brokenshire failed to make any reference to the issue of excessive second home ownership, simply stating that there needed to be "an increase in supply" of new homes.
