Lib Dems win big in by-election

This morning the Lib Dems are celebrating after they won nearly 60% of the vote in yesterdays Kendal Mintsfeet by-election. Lynne Oldham has been elected as the newest councillor on Kendal Town Council.

The election was called after previous councillor Helen Kelly had to step down because of illness.

Yesterday the Lib Dems received 388 votes, the Conservatives 145 and Labour 149. The election result was the worst Conservative showing in recent times.

Local MP Tim Farron said: "I want to congratulate Lynne for her hard work - she will be fabulous on the council. She will join councillors David Evans and Clare Feeney-Johnson as a strong team for Mintsfeet. I know she will build on the successes on bringing the empty home on Mintseet Road back into use, securing the pledge to resurface Appleby Road and pushing forward the fight to bring radiotherapy to Westmorland General Hospital."

Newly elected councillor Lynne Oldham said: "I want to thank local residents for the help, support and trust they have placed in me. I will work hard every day to repay that. I will join Tim, Clare and David and we will continue to work hard all year round for the community and fight for a better deal for Kendal."
