Lib Dem councillors reject plans for overnight parking charges at County Hall
Lib Dem county councillors have rejected plans to charge people to park overnight outside County Hall in Kendal.
The car park, which is currently only available to council staff, will soon be available to the general public adding 330 more parking spaces to the town.
But at a meeting of Cumbria County Council's Local Area Committee for South Lakeland, Lib Dem councillors proposed that parking should be free on the site from 6pm to 8am, alongside the already proposed free parking on Sunday mornings.
Local Lib Dem councillor Peter Thornton, who proposed rejecting the overnight charging plans, said: "It's great that we're going to be able to create an additional 330 spaces for people to be able to park in the town.
"But it's important that we encourage people to come to Kendal in the evening to be able to take advantage of the many great pubs, bars and restaurants that our town has to offer.
"So, I'm really glad that councillors have backed our proposals for there to be free parking during the evening and overnight."
