Local MP Tim Farron has welcomed the news that yesterday marks the declaration of the eradication of Rinderpest or more commonly known as 'cattle plague' which had been previously thought of as one of the world's most dreaded animal diseases.

Rinderpest has ravaged cattle and the human populations that depend on them throughout history. Yesterday animal health delegates meeting in Paris declared that Rinderpest is eradicated.

Tim said: "It's an enormously important achievement because it highlights what can be done by people working together. It has also taken a disease which has been a huge threat to the livelihood of thousands of people and farming communities and removed it."
