South Lakes MP Tim Farron has welcomed the announcement that sailors who risked their lives on the notorious World War 2 Arctic convoys will be recognised with medals as "long overdue".

During yesterday's Prime Minister's Questions, David Cameron confirmed the Government will recognise the contribution and sacrifice made by sailors who risked their lives to ensure valuable supplies reached the USSR. This announcement has come about following a review by the former diplomat Sir John Holmes, who was asked by the Government to look at rules on military decorations, which concluded that Arctic veterans should have their own medal to mark "the very difficult work they did".

Tim said: "This is extremely welcome, if long overdue, news. Many brave men lost their lives in order to keep these vital supply routes open and it is only right that their bravery and sacrifice be recognised by the British government."
