Cumbrian MP Tim Farron has hailed the announcement of a Government project worth £790,000 to tackle delays on the A590 between M6 junction 36 and the outskirts of Barrow. Tim has thanked councillors Rod Wilson and Janet Willis for their campaigning to make the road safer.

The plans unveiled today are part of tranche three of the Department for Transport's "pinch point fund", aimed at removing bottlenecks on local highway networks which restrict the movement of goods and people, thereby impeding regional growth.

The improvements will involve the installation of variable message signs at both ends of the A590 in order to provide adequate notice of diversions, preventing congestion in the event of works or accidents.

Commenting, Tim said: "This is fantastic news for local people, whose livelihoods depend on the quality of our roads and on being able to cover long distances with minimal disruption.

"Motorists are currently faced with a lack of diversion routes once they are committed on the A590, which can lead to severe bottlenecks in the event of any problems. In rural areas like ours traffic delays like this cause massive disruption to people and businesses, so I am delighted the Government are taking action to address the issue.

"I want to pay tribute to road safety campaigners and councillors Rod Wilson and Janet Willis who have lobbied for this funding. I was pleased to support them and make the case to ministers. I will keep fighting to make the A590 safer."
