Farron visits Morrisons in Kendal to see Buy British campaign in action
Local MP Tim Farron last week visited Kendal's Morrisons store to see the chain's commitment to British produce in action.
Tim toured the store and walked around the 'Market Street' section visiting the fishmongers, bakery and cake shop. He was shown around the store by the store manager and the chain's Director of Public Relations - they talked about how Morrisons only sell 100% British fresh meat; cut, prepare and package the majority of their fresh meat in-store; and place all colleagues at the store on a training course leading to an NVQ level 2 qualification.
Tim says, "It was great to walk around the store and see how much of the produce on sale is 100% British. It's also great to see how Morrisons are helping to offer their staff a route to gain further qualifications. This is something we need to support and make it easier for employers to allow their staff to train while they work.
"I spend a lot of my time criticising supermarkets for not giving farmers a fair deal - and that's why we really need a food market regulator to protect our farmers. However, it's important to give praise where its due. It's great to see Morrisons' commitment to 100% British sourcing of many meat products - we need all supermarkets to be doing this and giving our farmers a fair deal for their produce."
