Farron to launch ‘Save The Family Farm’ campaign at County Show
Local MP Tim Farron will launch his 'Save The Family Farm' campaign at the Westmorland County Show on Thursday.
Tim will be handing out a petition to call on the Government to protect the 3.8bn in direct payments for farmers.
The DEFRA Secretary, Michael Gove, recently refused to commit to protecting these vital subsidies.
Analysis based on DEFRA calculations shows that over 2500 of the nearly 7000 farms in the North West could end up going bust without government support payments.
Tim said: "The Conservative Government is threatening to cut subsidies for some farmers once we leave the EU, at the same time as they could face tariffs.
These payments are a lifeline for many hard-working local farmers. If high tariffs and lower subsidies put small farmers out of business, it could be the end of the family farm as we know it."
