Farron to join Lord Wallace at 'Fair Trade for Farmers' event

9 Nov 2007

Local MP Tim Farron is to join the Liberal Democrats' Foreign Affairs spokesman in the House of Lords William Wallace at an event in Sedbergh this evening that will look at fair trade for farmers in Britain and beyond. Mr Farron has been campaigning recently for the 'Fair Trade' brand to be extended to British farmers, and an independent market regulator to be created for the farming industry.

Mr Farron is keen for the Government to stand up for farmers and ensure that supermarkets and other big processors pay a fair price for meat and other goods. During this summer's foot and mouth outbreak some supermarkets forced farmers to accept poverty rates for their goods, meaning many lost out to the tune of thousands of pounds.

Tim Farron said:

"Lord Wallace is an experienced and talented politician who I know will have much to say about the issue of fair trade for British farmers. It is vitally important that as a party we show a willingness to fight for farmers. I know William is as committed as I am to getting a better deal for our farmers."
