Farron takes 'safety on the sands' campaign to parliament

South Lakes MP Tim Farron has thrown his support behind the Westmorland Gazette's campaign to raise awareness about the dangers posed to walkers on the Morecambe Bay sands. Today he submitted an Early Day Motion to Parliament, backing the campaign.

The Westmorland Gazette has produced thousands of 'Safety on the Sands' posters which have been distributed to businesses across South Lakeland and north Lancashire in a bid to save lives.

Tim and his family live close to the sands at Milnthorpe and regularly walk close to the sands; he is concerned that the dangers of the sands are not sufficiently highlighted especially to tourists. This has become even more important in light of the two recent incidents in June 2013. Tim has praised the Westmorland Gazette for their efforts so far in an Early Day Motion tabled in Parliament and has pledged to support any future actions to make Morecambe Bay sands safer for the public.

Commenting, Tim said: "I'm really pleased that the Gazette has decided to take the lead to ensure this important message gets across to the public.

"I wanted to submit this motion to parliament because the campaign is vital in improving people's awareness of the risks involved in walking on the sands without expert guidance. The sands are utterly beautiful, but walking across them without an accomplished guide is an extremely dangerous thing to do and it's important that visitors and locals alike are made fully aware of those dangers.
