Farron speaks to Kendal College students about life as an MP

This week South Lakes MP, Tim Farron spoke to students from Kendal College about his journey to becoming an MP and his thoughts on what the role entails.

Talking to the students, who are studying Level 3 BTEC in 'Uniformed Public Services', Tim discussed how he had been a volunteer for the Liberals since he was 16, but worked as a senior manager in higher education before winning the Westmorland and Lonsdale seat to become our local MP in 2005. He also spoke about the enjoyment he gets from his job,

The students, who are learning about 'The Government and its Policies' as part of their course, also engaged in a question and answer session with Tim, covering issues such as the renewal of Trident, higher education funding and the impact of public sector cuts on uniformed services.

Commenting, Tim said: 'Coming from a single-parent family, I wanted to highlight that my journey to becoming an MP wasn't an easy one.

I was inspired by the students knowledge of the subject and their awareness of both local and national political issues. Their questions were intelligent and, as always, it was insightful to listen to, and engage with, younger people who live in my constituency.'

Course Tutor, Guy Pocock said: "Tim Farron's recent visit to Kendal College gave the students a great opportunity to question at first hand an MP about a host of issues including how the cut backs in public sector spending would affect the student's chances of joining the uniformed services when they leave College. The visit was much appreciated and added greatly to the quality of the student's learning experience".
