Farron praises farm open day for local pupils

Local MP Tim Farron yesterday attended a farm open day with local primary school pupils. He praised the event, saying it is vital in helping pupils understand our area and where their food comes from.

The event took place on Tuesday and Thursday this week, and saw over 1600 local pupils visit Heaves Farm in Levens to learn about farming. Pupils were taken around a series of interactive stations and exhibits to learn about all aspects of farming and food production.

The event was organised by the Westmorland County Agricultural Society, and was supported by over 100 volunteers.

Tim said: "Farming is key to our area - our traditions, our economy, our landscape and our food. Yet even in a rural area like ours, it can seem a long way away for many young people.

"These farm open days are vital in helping local pupils to understand our area and to understand where their food comes from. From planting crops and spinning wool, through to milking cows and shearing sheep, pupils have been given a fantastic insight into the world of farming.

"I'd like to thank everyone who was involved in organising this event, particularly all the volunteers who kindly gave up their time to help make this event such a success."
